River Craig Mansion was quoted in a newspaper article, “Nothing but ghosts at River Craig Mansion.”

High on a wind-swept hill above the Meramec Valley is River Craig, relic of a vanished mode of life, where the bleak winds howl through the skeletons of oak, hickory and persimmon trees and winter's chill permeates the limestone walls of a long-deserted mansion. A gnarled, soft-spoken caretaker guards bolted doors house, though the house contains nothing but memories--and perhaps ghost or two. It is 20 minutes from St. Louis.

On a bluff in Wildwood, near its border with Eureka, sits the country house of John James Broderick. Known as the River Craig Mansion, it was built in 1880 by Augustus Alexander. It's a towering three-story Victorian, complete with a turret and a widow’s walk overlooking the Meramec River Valley.

“It’s odd today to think of Eureka as the country,”

But back in the days of travel by train and carriage, that is exactly what Eureka was--untamed country. The River Craig Mansion had spectacular views of all that land and of gorgeous sunsets.
